It is so great to feel the buzz of learning in the air in our morning literacy sessions! The children are so excited about reading and writing every day. They have settled into their routine and are working with great independence now. I love hearing groans when I tell them their time is up!
We have been focusing on narrative writing with the cycle being: 1. Think of an Idea --> 2. Plan your story --> 3. Write your story --> 4. Revise your story
When planning a story, it has been very helpful for the children to write their stories across multiple pages. They are also encouraged to touch each page and tell what they will write on it before they begin. They can they quickly sketch out the story and write it. After writing, they go back and revise by adding more details to their pictures and words, and fixing up their spelling and punctuation. They are encouraged to add dialogue through speech bubbles and to put action in the story by making their characters move.
Many children are taking action on their learning by making books at home and bringing them in to share! The class really enjoys reading their friend's books.
